Birch seed greenhouse at the “Zābaki” tree nursery of AS “Latvijas Finieris”
Design and construction for controlled birch pollination
SIA TERMOLAT designed and built a birch seed greenhouse at the “Zābaki” tree nursery of AS “Latvijas Finieris” in Krimulda Parish. The enclosed environment prevents the entry of pollen of unknown origin and allows precise, controlled pollination of 48 selected birch plants. Construction began in June 2026.

Solutions
- Structure - Hot-dip galvanised steel frame designed for Latvian snow and wind loads. Airtight sealing around vents and doors to prevent uncontrolled infiltration in the large volume.
- Climate control - Heating, ventilation, irrigation and LED lighting operate as a single automated system with remote monitoring. The system makes decisions from sensor readings, without an operator present.
- Air recirculation fans - Even out the vertical temperature difference throughout the volume and control humidity without ventilation, preventing condensation on cooler surfaces.
- Irrigation and water storage - An irrigation water storage tank with a pump and dosing unit and filtration is installed inside the greenhouse. The water warms to room temperature before reaching the plants.
- Energy efficiency - Humidity control by recirculation instead of ventilation, heating driven by actual demand and passively warmed irrigation water reduce heat consumption.
The result is a stable and uniform microclimate throughout the volume, ensuring synchronised flowering and a predictable window for controlled pollination, while keeping operating costs low.
